What Is Your Birthstone? Find Out Here
If you are one of those people that need a specific system for jewellery shopping, here is an idea: pick jewellery by your birthstone.
Let’s explain.
The idea of birthstones dates back to ancient times, and legend has it that wearing a gemstone during its designated month boosts its healing powers. The first list originated in Poland, with the modern version today coming from the National Association of Jewelers in 1912.
Here are the stones representing the 12 months of the year.
January: Garnet
Garnet is often associated with red but can also be found in purplish, yellow, green and orange.
Garnet and its red hue symbolises life-giving blood, love, vitality and light. This stone is believed to be protective, shielding its wearers from injury.
February: Amethyst
Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz and ranges from pale lilac to deep reddish purple.
Traditionally, purple was associated with royalty and was favoured by the ruling class. Today, amethyst is linked to mental clarity, spirituality and healing.
March: Aquamarine
Aquamarine is a dazzling blue gemstone whose colour invokes the tranquillity of the sea. Its name 'aquamarine' is Latin for 'seawater'.
Aquamarine, typically blue or blue-green, was thought to protect seafarers. It’s also associated with superior intellect and marital happiness.
April: Diamond
Diamonds have it all: classic beauty, sophistication and clarity. No wonder they are dubbed a girl’s best friend.
Most diamonds are clear; however, they can also exhibit different colours like blue, pink, red and warm yellow. Diamonds connote strength and eternal love.
May: Emerald
Emerald, like Aquamarine, comes from the Beryl family, and it's just about the most gorgeous shade of green you can ever lay your eyes on.
Emerald is said to bestow enhanced intelligence. It’s also said that wearing an emerald lets one predict the future.
June: Peals
Pearls are extremely rare today. The majority of pearls in the market today are cultivated or cultured. Pearl, beautiful and unblemished, depict purity, wisdom and honesty.
July: Ruby
Rubies bear a deep red hue, and the finest bear the highest price tag among gemstones.
These beauties are associated with physical strength and stamina and have a calming effect.
August: Peridot
Peridots are green with a unique yellowish tone. This gemstone is associated with protection and was said to repel evil spirits at night.
September: Sapphire
Sapphire comes in numerous hues, including blue, purple and yellow. Still, the word sapphire typically refers to the blue range.
Sapphire was thought to have medicinal properties and to protect the wearer from harm.
October: Opal
As far as exquisite birthstones go, this one takes the cake. Some opals can display dazzling flashes of colour as it's tilted at different angles. Opals are the only gems with this quality.
Because of its unique colour-changing quality, opal is associated with light, magic, and eye-healing properties. Others believed opal could make their wearer invisible!
November: Citrine
Citrine is a red-orange-ish variety of crystalline quartz.
Citrine is linked to happiness and healing.
December: Blue Topaz
Most blue topazes are extracted colourless or with a pale blue hue. After some lab treatment, they attain a vivid greenish-blue colour.
Blue topaz was believed to attract gold, which is why it's associated with wealth.
